Description
Meet Fred the Head, a life-sized scrap metal head sculpture handmade from reclaimed M6 nuts and repurposed steel components.
Fred was named by a visitor at one of our market stalls, and the name stuck. There is no nameplate or label attached, so his next owner is welcome to keep the name or give him a completely new identity.
A face built from reclaimed steel
Hundreds of individually positioned M6 nuts create Fred’s head, face, eyes, nose and mouth. The open centres of the nuts give the sculpture depth and allow light to pass through, changing his appearance as he is viewed from different angles.
The head is supported by two large crossed steel bolts and mounted on a circular reclaimed industrial base. Marks and small variations in the steel are part of the materials’ previous life and add to the finished character.
A proper talking point
Fred works well on a substantial shelf, desk, reception counter, office display or workshop cabinet. He makes an unusual gift for anyone who appreciates engineering, reclaimed materials, industrial design or artwork that is a little different.
The sculpture has been finished with clear lacquer to protect the natural steel appearance. It is intended for indoor display. It can be placed outside, but moisture and changing weather will eventually cause the steel to rust unless the protective coating is regularly maintained.
